Note: Several members of our local community attended a gathering arranged by Mayor James Brown on October 20, 2004, to consider how best to approach encouraging character in our community. Attendees were invited to visit this website, which is one way that the discussion might continue. The website was initially set up as a demonstration for members of the Rome City School District Character Committee members.
As a result of the meeting, I have begun to compose my thoughts about what to do and why. Click on "My thoughts on how to proceed..." and feel free to join in with yours.
A keen observer once described living with character as understanding "the way". He divided people into: • those who intuitively knew "the way", • those who could learn "the way", and • those who need fixed rules.
Fixed rules are not the wisest way to decide what to do in a complex world. Teaching character helps more people learn "the way" and to understand why it is in their long term best interest to do so.
Welcome to "Exploring Character", integrating character education into the curriculum as it stands through easily accessible simple wisdoms garnered from history, literature and the student's personal experience.

By the way, the observer we mentioned at the outset was Confucius, writing 2,500 years ago. Character was important then. It's important now. And, if we choose to teach character, civilization may be around for another 2,500 years for it to be important then.
