Mission Statement
A mission statement is designed to focus the effort of every affected individual toward a common purpose. It is the yardstick by which every potential decision should be measured. As the brand by which the institution is known, it should be short, concise, memorable, and draw members into harmony with a shared sense of purpose.
The Mission of the Rome City School District [RCSD] is to nurture, challenge, and inspire each learner to develop academically and socially in the journey to become a valuable member of society.
Beliefs:
• First, we must do no harm.
• We must exhibit excellence in all that we do.
• We must strive for continuous improvement.
• We believe in individual accountability for performance.
• We demand respect and dignity in all interactions.
• We encourage and value diversity.
Observations on the RCSD Mission Statement
- If one were to read the first statement of the RCSD Mission, one might assume that students are vessels to be filled. However, the Beliefs section makes clear that everyone in the community, together, is learning and growing.
- In other words, it is the mission of everyone in any position in the Rome City School district to participate fully to help each other learn and grow.
Character Education Committee Mission Statement tasks
- The first task of the Character Education Committee is to recall to mind that the district's mission statement should be at the forefront of all decision-making:
- How each of us acts.
- How each of us relates to each other.
- How each of us fulfills our duties -- whatever that duty may be.
- The second task of the Character Education Committee is to connect the district's mission statement to understanding the personal value of the principles behind them.
- "First, we must do no harm" -- because others live life as acutely as we, ourselves, do.
- "We must exhibit excellence in all that we do" -- because to learn to harness the mind is the best way to assure one's very best future.
- "We must strive for continuous improvement" -- because with a sense of time and one's place in it we see that everyone is on the same journey as ours and that journey never ends.
- "We believe in individual accountability for performance" -- because when one has a sense of time and one's place in it, along with a sense of others, working towards a sound map of reality, prudent judgment is encouraged.
- "We demand respect and dignity in all interactions" -- because the accuracy of our mental map of reality requires continuous reevaluation with assistance from others.
- "We encourage and value diversity" -- because sometimes we think we are right not because we are right, but simply because we think we are right. Faced with the possibility of being wrong, others offer the possibility of a better way of doing or seeing things.
- The third task of the Character Education Committee is to present a coherent framework for character education, a process to consider it, and a plan to make character education easily accessible to the community in a manner that conveys why that framework has compelling individual value.
- The fourth task of the Character Education Committee is to facilitate integrating character education into the curriculum with a minimum of disruption and the maximum potential for success.
